Consider Honoring a Deceased Firefighter with a Foundation Donation

September 5, 2014

In recent years I have become more conscious of the importance of honoring and paying tribute to the contributions and sacrifices made by those serving in our fire service community while they are still living.  The unfortunate reality is that we often fail to demonstrate appreciation to our members for their faithful service until it is too late or until they are gone.  It is for this reason I wish to offer two suggestions concerning a fitting and unique way to pay tribute to that special fire service member:  while he or she is here to delight in the thought of being remembered, or to honor the memory of a firefighter or loved one who is now deceased. Allow me to propose that you, your department, or friends take advantage of the opportunity to make a donation to the S. C. State Firefighters' Association Foundation as a living testimonial of your admiration and respect.  A donation to our Foundation Fund can provide a practical way to memorialize a deceased member or render a meaningful tribute to a firefighter who is still living, and, at the same time, help our Association move forward with worthy projects. Often we read an obituary where it is stated, “in lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to....” This statement should be the trigger to make a charitable contribution/donation to the Firefighters' Foundation, and it doesn't have to be a firefighter whose memory you wish to honor. If you choose to make a donation to the Foundation, make sure the Association is provided the name and address of the member's family so they can be properly notified of your generous gift and thoughtfulness.  In addition, you (the donor) will be provided an acknowledgement stating the tax-deductible nature of your donation for your records. The S. C. State Firefighters' Association Endowment Fund was established in 2001 as a Foundation through which anyone may contribute financially to promote the many special projects of our organization, i.e. scholarships, Leadership Institute, public fire safety educational activities, fire and life safety initiatives, public awareness campaigns, etc.  Whenever you wish to do something nice to remember a loved one, friend, or fellow firefighter in a manner that will be both lasting and effectual, consider giving to the Foundation.
