Association debuts its newsletter, Rattle Watch

The South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association debuted its e-newsletter, Rattle Watch, on May 5, 2022. The newsletter is the Association’s newest method of communicating important deadlines, event information, exclusive member discounts, and general fire-service related news to its membership and beyond.

Over the 100 plus years of serving South Carolina firefighters, the Association has produced numerous newsletters with different titles and nearly exclusively offered in print. The purpose of all Association newsletters, both past and present, is to inform.

The term ‘rattle watch’ dates back to Colonial America and refers to a group of volunteers who would patrol the streets at night carrying large wooden rattles. If a fire was seen, the men spun the rattles, then directed the responding citizens to form bucket brigades. In other words, this ‘rattle watch’ communicated important information to the community it served. The Association’s goal with the newsletter falls in line with the duties this group and thus was dubbed Rattle Watch.
