Sumter County, SC (WLTX) - Several first responders were flood victims themselves, but in the time of trouble instead of worrying about their situation, they helped others. That’s why the South Carolina Firefighters' Foundation has raised $17,500 for 20 South Carolina firefighters who suffered loss during the flood. “We heard stories literally of guys getting up leaving their house that morning, house flooded and then them going to work and working a full shift,” SC Firefighters’ Foundation Board of Trustees Chairman Jamie Caggiano explained. “So that’s why the foundation’s here, to help them during those times of need.” Eleven firefighters in Sumter County who were affected by the flood received checks. Sumter Fire Dept. Engineer Roy Hancock lost a lot during the flood, but worked hours to help others. He said the support from the community is amazing. “It’s a special feeling to know that the state of South Carolina firefighters association is there to back up their people," Hancock said. “The brotherhood in the fire service is unreal, you know it wasn't a matter of 24 hours after the people got off shift that they were at my house helping me.” Firefighters affected by the flood in Lee County, Georgetown County, North Myrtle Beach, North Charleston, Williamsburg County and Columbia were also given money to help with their recovery efforts. Every firefighter received up to $1500. The funds were raised by several fundraisers and private donations. The foundation members say they hope they can help more firefighters in the future.
