Volunteer and Career Service Paths

March 23, 2016

The State of South Carolina is rich in resources to train our state firefighters. In an effort to provide a framework for these resources the Training and Education Committee was tasked with developing a training pathway. The vision of the pathway was to develop a system that a department, training officer, or individual firefighter could use in developing their training needs from the South Carolina Fire Academy. The pathway is not meant to be a mandate or directive from any organization, but a tool to assist all departments and their personnel in their growth in the fire service. This tool can be used to develop departmental criteria for advancement, as well as a basic outline for departmental or individual training needs. In conjunction with the S.C. Fire Academy (SCFA) a list of current courses has been charted in subject groups so that our personnel can see a starting point in each discipline and follow it to the most advanced point. The student can follow this progression till they meet their desired goal in that area. The pathway will be updated as needed to meet the most current curriculum available from the SCFA. The pathway has been divided into two pathways volunteer and career. The purpose of having two pathways is that there are a few distinct differences in the available choices. The most distinct would be the 1700 series of courses that are predominately volunteer base deliveries. The specialty courses such as Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, Driver Operator, and Inspections may not be desired by all firefighters but the chart for those are included. In the near future the committee plans to develop a Fire Officer pathway that will show the courses available as well as the possibilities of higher education opportunities to our state firefighters.
