Social Security Fairness Act: What South Carolina firefighters need to know

The Social Security Fairness Act was signed into law by President Biden on January 5, expanding Social Security benefits for retired firefighters, police officers, and teachers. An estimated 2.5 million Social Security recipients will see an average monthly increase of $360 by December 2025.

The Social Security Fairness Act eliminates two federal policies that barred employees with a public pension from collecting their full benefits under the federal retirement program and that reduced benefits for those workers' surviving spouses and family members.
