SkillsUSA Competition set for April 4 in Anderson

March 31, 2014

The South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association (SCSFA) announced today that eight South Carolina technical schools are sending 15 individuals who will compete in the firefighting section of the SkillsUSA South Carolina Championships on April 4 at the Anderson County Fire Department Training Center.  The awards ceremony will be held April 5 at the TD Convention Center in Greenville, S.C.  The firefighting section is one of more than 80 skills and leadership contests. “Volunteers are the lifeblood of most of the fire departments here in S.C.,” said Billy Gibson, Chief, Pickens Rural Fire Department and Past President of the SCSFA.   “This championship is an excellent opportunity for students at the various technical centers to demonstrate the skills learned during the past year, and get them interested in the fire service.  We know that if you get high school age students involved early, they most often continue to serve their communities in firefighting.” The firefighting contest evaluates contestants’ preparation for firefighting careers through hands-on skill demonstrations and both written and oral presentations.  Areas tested include safety; breathing apparatus; fire streams; ladders; ropes, knots and hoses; fire control; ventilation; emergency medical care and rescue and protecting fire cause evidence.  Contestants are evaluated using standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The winners of the S.C. SkillsUSA competition will go to Kansas City, MO, June 23 – 27, 2014 where they will compete during the annual National Leadership and Skills Conference – a showcase for career and technical education students.
