Recruitment Grant Adjustments

November 28, 2017

As grant year 3 was nearing completion, we received permission to extend the proceeds of our SAFER grant for additional firefighters into an additional 5 counties of South Carolina. Those counties are: Dillon, Edgefield, Marion, Saluda, and Williamsburg. These areas are largely rural and are needful of added fire service staffing. The plan involves adding at least 30 per county for a total of 480 newly trained firefighters. Provided the local agency has not budgeted for adding firefighters, the grant funds cover costs of training, fitness for duty physicals, and structural firefighter personal protective clothing ensemble.   These 5 counties bring the availability of grant dollars to 16 counties of our state. These counties are: Allendale Bamberg Berkeley Calhoun Chesterfield Dillon Edgefield Hampton Jasper Laurens Marion Marlboro McCormick Saluda Union Williamsburg Fire service leaders in these counties are encouraged to contact me by email at [email protected] for inclusion in this grant. Additional approved amendments include:

Contract with a fire service-consulting firm to conduct a needs assessment in the 16 identified counties.

Securing a professional agency to script new marketing materials, including print literature, radio and television advertising; to work with media outlets to establish and purchase airtime.

Purchasing a mobile digital display sign. The South Carolina State Firefighters' Association will establish procedures and criteria for the use of the sign by member agencies. The sign will be utilized on a first come-first basis to departments for their recruitment and retention efforts and for community risk reduction messages.

Conducting at least 2 seminars focused on women and minorities in emergency services. These one-day events will blend presentations from minority members of fire/emergency services from out-of-state and in-state followed by sessions of skills demonstrations and active involvement of the participants.
