South Carolina State Firefighters' Association Life Safety Education Section PRESS RELEASE March 22, 2016 Fire Fatalities Far Outpacing Past Years - Action Needed! [caption id="attachment_9170" align="alignright" width="296"] Click to read[/caption] As of March 21, South Carolina has experienced 40 fire deaths this year. Firefighters everywhere stand with the S.C. State Fire Marshal and his staff in calling all Carolinians to take stock of their home fire safety. Since January 1st we have lost almost twice as many of our fellow citizens as last year as mentioned by the State Fire Marshal. The 17,000+ members of the S.C. State Firefighter’s Association stand with our State Fire Marshal in asking everyone to take a few minutes to assess their home fire safety. Simply follow the checklist below:
  1. Do you have smoke alarms on every floor of your home?
  2. Are your smoke alarms less than ten (10) years old? (Check the back)
  3. Have you changed the batteries in your smoke alarms in the last six months?
  4. Have you tested each of the alarms in your home this month?
  5. Do you have an escape plan that everyone living there knows?
If you answered “NO” to any of the questions above, you are at greater risk, and we ask that you take the necessary steps to reduce that risk. If you find any difficulty in accomplishing those tasks contact your local fire department with questions or visit www.nfpa.org/public-education to learn more about what you can do to save your life and the lives of those you love. _________________________________________________________________________ For more information or to arrange an interview please contact: Lee Levesque President of the S.C.
