A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who attended our Fall Quarterly Meeting at the S.C. Fire Academy. It was a wonderful day of activities for us all. FDNY Captain Stephen Marsar presented a challenging program on Survivability Profiling, which I hope got us all to think about where, how and when we commit our human resources at structural fires. Thank you to the Association staff for doing their usual excellent job of making the program a success. Several other events took place as part of the program Wednesday. Harry Girtman was honored by the S.C. Society of Fire Service Instructors by naming Fire Academy classroom 104 in his honor. Harry is well known for his knowledge, ability and spirit to challenge students and be an innovator in fire service instruction. Your Association office is now paid for! We celebrated by having Andy Shene with First Citizens Bank and several Past Presidents on hand to tear up the mortgage. Being debt free we will have revue available to move forward with improvements that will benefit our membership even more. Tim Travers with the NFPA and Chief Kyle Minick with the S.C. Sprinkler Coalition gave updates on the effort to promote residential fire sprinklers in our state. Your Committee chairs gave reports on their work, goals and upcoming events. Please note that the Health & Safety Conference will be January 18-20, 2013, with our winter meeting being that weekend as well. Our annual legislative day will be March 6, 2013, and the Fire & Rescue conference will be held June 10-15, 2013. Please mark your calendars now and plan to participate in these events. We were honored and proud to introduce eleven individuals who will participate in the 2013 class of Leadership Institute. Congratulations and best wishes to them as they embark on a year-long education about the S.C. Fire Service. Jonathan Jones gave an update on SCFiretraining.com. I think you will find the work behind the online training will pay off for us all by allowing our firefighters to have access to relevant, effective training, which can be tracked by the individual and be credited for skills maintenance and ISO purposes. And, our own Jason Pope presented information about our online submission initiative. We are excited about this effort and how it will help you manage your rosters and cut down on confusion when submitting annual forms. We were pleased to have Chief Butch Womack, President of the S.C. State Association of Fire Chiefs, on hand to give an update on their activities. Chief Shane Ray finished out the day by presenting updates on the S.C. Fire Academy and the new curriculum that will be coming out soon. There are exciting things to come for the entire S.C. Fire Service, and I encourage you all to stay informed and get involved.
