New Prospect Fire Department celebrates 50 years

April 30, 2014

CONGRATULATIONS....50 Years of Service! The upstate community of New Prospect came together on Sunday afternoon, April 27th, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the New Prospect Fire Department.   Family, friends, representatives of County Council, and members of neighboring departments came together to demonstrate their support and to join the department's firefighters in a time of reminiscing and fellowship. The New Prospect Fire Department was established in 1964 by community leaders in response to the need for expanded fire protection in this northern portion of Spartanburg County bordering on the shores of Lake Bowen.  The first chief's position was offered to the motivating leader, Glenn Cogdill, whose vision for the department was the foundation on which the future was built. The department has transitioned over the years to what is now a well-managed and professionally run delivery system.  Credit for the department's progress and the advancements made are due in large part to the leadership provided by the chiefs, past and present, as well as the guidance offered by forward-thinking fire commission members who have fostered an attitude of “team work” that is evidenced by their firefighters. New Prospect is a combination department operating out of two stations with a fleet of modern and efficient apparatus designed for both rural and urban operations.  Chief Phil Caruso serves at the helm of the department and brings tremendous experience to the organization having retired from the City of Spartanburg Fire Department as their Chief after many years of service. During the Anniversary festivities, Chief Caruso paused to thank his firefighters, the keystone of the department, for their sacrifices and support.  Also, the Chief read a letter from the President of our Association, Jonathan Jones, congratulating  the department on reaching this important 50 year milestone and pledging the Association's support in the days ahead.
