My Experience at FRI Denver

September 7, 2012

As a three-time attendee at a Fire-Rescue International-Global Forum for Leadership conference, I left Denver sensing the same thing I had at the other events in Atlanta.  Simply put, I left Denver totally re-energized to carry out the tasks of our great profession. My focus at all three of these conferences has been volunteer recruitment and retention. Each time I have learned something new, challenging, and worthy of implementation.  I’ve found the issues and concerns we observe in South Carolina are no less different than emergency services from Maine to Washington and North Dakota to Texas. Interfacing with peers, hearing well-known speakers, making new contacts, and checking out the exhibit hall were valuable opportunities. Foremost among the motivations was the challenge delivered by Pierce Manufacturing President, Jim Johnson, in his remarks prior to announcing the Fire Chief of the Year awards. He stated the best leaders demonstrate servant leadership. President Johnson asked willing participants-those truly seeking to display exemplary character qualities-to leave the conference, return home and in each of the 21 days which followed to look for and create opportunities for servant leadership. He noted those who did so in each of the 21 days would establish new priorities in their lives. In so doing they would achieve greater satisfaction in their personal lives but much more so in the lives of those they serve.
