Meet Luke Riddle, Firefighting Program Instructor with Anderson County
March 12, 2012
Take a minute and get to know Mr. Luke Riddle. He is the Firefighting Program Instructor at the Anderson Districts I & II Career and Technology Center in Williamston, SC. The program teaches 10th-12th grade students from four high schools about firefighting. Currently, there are approximately 80 students in the program. The school is composed of students from four feeder high schools: Belton Honea Path High School, Palmetto High School, Powdersville High School, and Wren High School. The program is in its second year of existence and teaches students to the NFPA 1001 Standard using the Essentials V curriculum. As a sophomore, students are introduced to firefighting; its history, career opportunities, equipment, and PPE/SCBA use. Students are also offered certifications in Basic First Aid/CPR through the American Red Cross and NIMS IS-100. As a junior, students take the South Carolina Fire Academy (1152) Fundamentals of Firefighting course. The ninety hour course teaches fire behavior, personal protective equipment, extinguishers, ladders, search, fire streams, and fire attack. The course is the first step to becoming a qualified firefighter in South Carolina. As a senior, students continue to be taught from both the Firefighter I and Firefighter II curriculum and are allowed to obtain a certification as an Emergency Medical Responder through the American Red Cross. A student who graduates from the program will have over 450 hours of documented firefighter training. The future goals of the program are to continue adding SCFA courses to have students job ready upon completion of the program.
