Foundation to participate in upcoming Midlands Gives

April 26, 2022

The South Carolina Firefighters Foundation is excited to participate in Midlands Gives, an online giving event that focuses on bringing the region together as one community to raise money and support for local nonprofits. Midlands Gives is hosted by the Central Carolina Community Foundation.

The Foundation exists because of your support, and in turn, your support uplifts firefighters from across the state going through tough times.

Just ask Robbie Holloway, an Engineer at the Gantt Fire Department in Greenville, South Carolina, and a member of the fire service for over three decades. It was discovered during a routine department physical in early 2021 that his iron levels were low and he was advised to see his doctor. After failed treatment, it was determined that Holloway had colon cancer.

Faced with an uncertain health and financial future, Holloway credits Gannt Fire Chief Mark Holbrook for letting him know that the South Carolina Firefighters Foundation offers financial assistance to South Carolina firefighters in need.

“When we joined the Association, I thought we were joining just for the meetings,” said Holloway. “In the lamest terms, it’s important to have someone that cares for us; all my doctors say, ‘We’re not doctors, we’re team members.’ The Association as a member on my team means a lot.”

Holloway uses the money provided by the Foundation to pay for medication and office visits. He is on the road to recovery and has one more treatment left.

“I absolutely view the Foundation and Association differently now. It’s one of those things that you never think about until you need it, and I am thankful to have it.”

Without fundraisers like Midlands Gives, the Foundation wouldn’t be able to lift some of Eng. Holloway’s burdens. As we approach this day of giving, consider donating to the South Carolina Firefighters Foundation to support your state’s first responders.
