Guest post by Mr. Jason Dennis, Captain with Midway Fire Rescue and Joint Cancer Committee member. You can follow Jason on Twitter @scjasondennis The Association has a special joint committee working towards creating a Firefighter Cancer Presumptive Health Bill to benefit the members of the S.C. State Firefighters’ Association. Currently the committee is researching and gathering information, and we are asking for your help. When you see your doctor, do you inform him or her that you participate in firefighting activities? If you serve in a volunteer capacity, is your doctor aware that past or potential illnesses may be the result of exposures at emergency scenes? It is very important to remind your doctor you serve as a firefighter each time you have an examination. Most firefighters, paid and volunteer, have an annual physical with some type of screening, but often times, they don’t relate their diagnosis with fire service exposures. The Association is asking that you keep your doctor informed of what you do. Whether you are paid or volunteer, your health is important to us, and we want to make sure we do everything we can to help. We are in the process of creating and distributing an online survey on this topic, and the information you provide will help with statistical analysis that may lead to future healthcare benefits.
