Fire Academy is searching for development team members

October 4, 2012

“Reaching the SC fire service, one member at the time” is not simply a slogan — it is the way of life for the South Carolina Fire Academy. Producing new and revised training courses requires collaboration between staff members at the SC Fire Academy and members of the SC fire service. We need subject matter experts (SMEs) from all areas of the fire service—volunteer or career, training staff and non-instructors—and other individuals who can assist by providing feedback for course content and locating research data, photographs and other information needed to produce quality courses. SMEs also may write test questions or create supplemental instructional materials during the development of program. Most importantly, SMEs must be dedicated individuals who posses the technical knowledge of the subject and a desire to advance the fire service throughout the state. SME groups typically complete their work in three- to four-months, during which time in-person and web-based meetings may be held. Most of the work is completed using a web-based project collaboration website called Base Camp. To use Base Camp, SMEs need to have basic computer skills and a spirit of compromise. Participating in the SC Fire Academy’s course development process is a personally and professionally rewarding experience. We are currently taking applications for a new course, Emergency Vehicle Response: Operations. This intermediate-level driving course will introduce students to elements of NFPA 1002, national response trends, response considerations and intersection management practices, and it will provide a deeper understanding of general driving considerations introduced in EVRA.

If you are interested in serving as a subject matter expert for this course, we would love for you to apply. Information concerning the development process, the role of subject matter experts and a link to the application are located HERE

Please fill out the electronic application form no later than October 20, 2012. All applicants will be notified of their application status on or about October 30, 2012. Work on this project will begin during the first part of November. Do you have a dedication to the state fire service and have a willingness to serve? Then we need your input!
