This year, for the first time, a new training is being offered during the Firefighters' Association Conference in Myrtle Beach. Children's Trust and DHEC are hosting a Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) certification class on June 7-9 and a renewal class for technicians whose certification has expired on June 10. June 11 there will be a car seat check held at the convention center from 10 AM-1 PM. Children's Trust is paying the $85.00 certification fee for those who wish to participate in the training as well as providing free liability insurance.
Having fire fighters trained as Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians is imperative for the safety of our children. According to NHTSA, 85% of people do not use car seats correctly in South Carolina making car seat checks essential for parents and caregivers. Car seats, when used correctly, reduce the risk of death to children younger than 1 by 71% and risk of death to children 1-4 by 54%. Over 100 fire stations across South Carolina have certified CPST’s. We encourage even more fire stations to go through the certification training. Currently 17 counties in South Carolina do not have a car seat inspection station. It is our goal to establish at least one inspection station in each county. Below are the instructions on how to register for the certification or renewal course. If you have questions or trouble registering, please contact me and I will assist you!For questions:
