Added Training Opportunities
October 24, 2016
This is an exciting time for firefighters across our country. More mainstream departments and organizations are accepting web-based education as a method to reach firefighters for continuous training and education. Offerings in web based training are growing.
In South Carolina, we have been blessed with a strong commitment from the S.C. Fire Academy in this area for some time. The academy developed a number of certification level programs as well as provided many programs to educate responders in either prerequisite elements or new hazards on the fire ground.
Nationally, several major organizations and publishers have also embraced the need for technology based programs in an effort to reach the emergency responder community. Groups like the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation, Emergency Responder Safety Institute, and the National Fire Academy have produced quality programs and issues hundreds of training programs in an online format annually.
Recently, several new groups have burst onto the market with exceptional online technology based programs geared toward certain aspects of response. This list continues to grow, but we would like to feature a couple of them in this post. We will post more on www.scfiretraining.com and on our social media channels; twitter and Facebook in the future.
International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC)
The IAFC has several opportunities for chiefs and chief officers to review and develop decision making processes electronically. Their new IAFC Academy is a site dedicated to online training. On this new LMS, they currently have a course for Propane Emergencies. This is a free class where a certificate is issued at its completion. The IAFC also provides webinars, podcasts and an on-demand digital library of educational sessions from Fire Rescue International.
Situational Awareness Matters Online Academy
Chief Richard Gassaway has been a world leading expert in emergency response situational awareness for several years. His seminars and presentations have been overwhelmingly received, so in order to each more first responders, he is offering this new online training program. This program does have a cost but with the enrollment fee, the students receives access to all 13 courses, assessments and certification to authenticate completion of the program. With this enrollment, students also have access to a monthly teleseminar where he will be coaching students and answering questions live. To learn more or to begin the enrollment process, click HERE.
Online and technology based training is more available than ever before. Areas around the country are just now discovering what we in South Carolina have known for several years. Online training is not the “silver bullet” and will never replace intense hands-on basic firefighting skills, but to properly prepare for an all-hazards response, we all need to know more, know where to find information and continue to seek new knowledge daily. Online training is “a way” to discover this knowledge.
