1% - Use It Wisely or Lose It!

June 7, 2019

Over the past year, the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association’s 1% staff have been assisting departments across the state to better understand the policies and procedures of the Firemen’s Insurance & Inspection Fund.  After a Legislative Audit Council (LAC) 2018 audit, the Association’s Supervisory Committee along with the staff determined a need to provide training.  The results of the findings and planning by staff was the development and delivery of 1% - Use It Wisely or Lose It class. These regional delivered classes have been well attended and received. Starting at Fire-Rescue 2018, an additional round of the class has been encouraged by the SCSFA Executive Committee. Jeff Oswald, the 1% Coordinator has scheduled these classes throughout the summer to meet the demand. Anyone in the department who is associated the management of their fund is strongly encouraged to attend. Registration is required by visiting the following webpage.  The following schedule has been posted on the Association’s 1% page on the website (https://scfirefighters.org/1-regional-training-class/). So, what is “1% - Use it Wisely or Lose it”?  Here is a description of this 2-3 hour class: South Carolina Fire Departments receive over $16 million dollars annually in 1% funds.  These funds are meant to be used to benefit firefighters by providing benefits and paying for expenses that the regular department resources will not provide.  But there are many regulations tied to these 1% funds.  Every year there are departments that are losing their 1% funds because they are not complying with the requirements and regulations.  It is very important that your fire department has multiple people who are familiar with the accounting practices and regulations of the 1% funds, so you are not one of those departments that loses your 1% funds.  Come join us to find out what you need to know to keep and best use your 1% funds. We look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming classes. You may contact Jeff Oswald with any questions in reference to the classes.
