Details: Hourly rate for EMT – B is $14.28; EMT – A is $14.45 and Paramedic is $14.62.

Job Description Summary Under general supervision, performs duties for the Fire Department. Work involves performing inspections of equipment and station; training others in fire safety; responding to fire, rescue, and medical calls; performing equipment tests; reviewing pre-fire plans; etc. Reports to the Lieutenant. This position is on an as needed basis only and is not eligible for any bonus programs. Job Responsibilities 10% - Performs inspections of equipment and station; completes daily and weekly preventive maintenance reports; completes fire and medical reports. 10% - Performs fire suppression duties which involves responding to fire and rescue calls; administering first aid and/or CPR to victims as necessary and removing victims from dangerous or potentially dangerous situations; suppressing and extinguishing fires; performing ventilation, salvage, forcible entry, and overhaul duties and functions; climbing ladders to access windows, roofs, etc.; and cleaning up after fires. 10% - Performs hydrant, hose and pumper tests to ensure effectiveness and efficiency of equipment; reviews building changes and contents; reviews maps and data of streets and road locations; reviews hydrants, churches, apartments, complexes, schools, and other building locations. 10% - Handles the responsibility for the use, minor maintenance, and cleanliness of fire department equipment including pumpers, service trucks, generators, ladders, axes, extinguishers, etc.; informs appropriate personnel for missing or damaged gear. 10% - Reviews pre-fire plans in order to keep abreast of structural layouts, power meter installations, fire department connections, and hydrant locations. 10% - Handles the responsibility for the general cleaning and maintaining of the station house. 10% - Performs related duties such as fire prevention, chimney inspections, assisting other departments, smoke detector checks, and other public services. 10% - Receives reviews, prepares, and/or submits a variety of reports and documents including apparatus checks, fire alarm report, medical alarm report, various logs, maintenance reports, pre­ fire plans, hydrant cards, and general office correspondence. 10% - Utilizes various types of equipment and machinery such as vehicle, pumper, various mechanical tools, medical supplies, chainsaw, generators, fire extinguishers, various other firefighting equipment, and general office supplies. 10% - Performs general office/clerical work, including but not limited to preparing reports and records, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc. Performance Measurement Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Fire Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Certified Firefighter. Has general knowledge of the principles, practices, goals, and programs of fire administration. Has general knowledge of laws and ordinances affecting the planning, development, and implementation of fire suppression and safety programs. Is able to deal with the general public and officer advice and assistance in fire suppression and safety. Has knowledge of the behavior of fires as it relates to fire suppression. Has knowledge of hydraulics, mechanical concepts, etc. as related to fire suppression and safety. Has general knowledge of fire suppression, codes and ordinances, fire safety, and other related subjects as applied to municipal operations. Has knowledge in the areas of fire science, hazardous materials response and handling, rescue operations, emergency medical response procedures, hydraulics, electrical, mechanics, pre-fire planning, construction I engineering, etc. Is able to operate fire apparatus as required to combat fires and perform other emergency procedures. Has knowledge of the practices, methods, and procedures relating to fire and rescue calls and situations. Is able to prepare technical and other reports. Has knowledge of the characteristics of a wide variety of hazardous materials and the proper procedures for managing a hazardous materials incident as mandated by OSHA. Has knowledge of bloodburne airborne pathogens and infection control; has knowledge of risk management and safety procedures. Has knowledge of the various City streets, neighborhoods, landmarks, and hydrant locations. Has general knowledge of medical applications and procedures. Is able to make sound, educated decisions. Is able to effectively communicate with various types of groups and individuals such as co-workers, supervisor, other fire department personnel, Emergency Medical Services, police, patients, schools, businesses, and the general public. Is able to use judgment and discretion in carrying out duties and responsibilities. Has the verbal ability to make effective presentations and prepare effective reports, and the mathematical ability to carry out needed calculations accurately and quickly. Has good fire suppression and safety skills. Has knowledge of applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions. Is able to perform duties under adverse environmental conditions such as no I low vision due to smoke, hazardous atmospheres which require the use of breathing apparatus, working in confined spaces or at heights, extreme heat from fire, and hot and cold outdoor temperatures, odors, toxic agents, wetness, noise, humidity and disease. Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interaction with internal and external entities with whom the position interacts. Ensures such standards are not violated. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Minimum Education and Training - High School diploma or GED. Must be a certified NFPA/IFSAC Firefighter I and Firefighter II and at least a National Registry EMT – B. Must possess a valid state issued drivers’ license. Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including fire apparatus, truck, van, generators, chain saw, rescue jaws, water vacs, slide projector, drill, grinder, etc. Must be physically able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally and/or twenty-five pounds of force frequently and/or up to ten pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work. Work involves standing, walking, climbing, balancing, reaching, and crouching for long periods of time. Must be able to lift position and/or carry weights of up to 250 pounds. Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things. Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or direction from supervisor. Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, tools, medical tools, etc. Must have significant levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, night vision, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc. Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency, unusual or dangerous situations. The worker may be subject to danger or risk to a significant degree, or to tension as a regular, consistent part of the job.
