The Deputy Fire Chief provides executive oversight of operational and administrative divisions, including fire suppression, EMS delivery, personnel management, fiscal accountability, strategic planning, and intergovernmental coordination. This position operates at both strategic and command levels, responding to emergency incidents throughout Berkeley and Charleston Counties and assuming command responsibilities as required. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Deputy Fire Chief responsibility will encompass many job functions that involve but are not limited to the following tasks: Oversight of Battalion Chiefs and operational divisions Budget development and fiscal monitoring Policy development and organizational planning Grant development and compliance oversight Coordination with Finance, Human Resources, and City Administration Participation in Emergency Operations Center activations under NIMS Community engagement and public representation Direct and supervises City firefighting forces during fire suppression and rescue activities within the response area as directed by the Fire Chief.

Performs administrative duties associated with the monthly and daily reports pertaining to such matters as fuel usage and mileage, monthly reports to the State Fire Marshal, DHEC monthly report, and fire loss reports, maintains records of equipment for City. Oversee the advancement of fire department personnel up to the rank of Battalion Chief; ensures that all personnel are fully qualified for the position they are seeking. Evaluates the performance of personnel for the purpose of making recommendations to the Fire Chief for training, promotion, and other personnel actions. Assists in maintaining morale and discipline within the department; has authorization to place personnel on reports and must notify the Chief of all disciplinary actions. Performs other duties as directed by the Fire Chief.

Education, Training and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, required Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible command-level experience in the fire service IFSAC Fire Officer III IFSAC Fire Service Instructor II Incident Safety Officer FEMA ICS: 700, 100, 200, 300, 400, 800 Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Public Administration, Fire Administration, Executive Leadership, or related field Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) - Chie Fire Officer (CFO) designation Executive Fire Officer (EFO) candidate or graduate Incident Management Team Experience Experience with municipal budgeting and capital planning Experience with ISO documentation and audit preparation Supervisory Responsibilities: Strategic and systems-level thinking Strong fiscal acumen Operational command competence Organizational development experience Ethical leadership and professional integrity Ability to mentor emerging officers Clear communication and political awareness Compensation & Benefits: Starting salary range is $76,594.05 - $88,403.19. The City of Hanahan offers a competitive benefit package including health insurance and participation in the State Retirement plan (PEBA). Normal office hours are 8:30am – 5:00pm. May be asked to work additional or different hours, days, nights and weekends to meet operational needs.
