ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Responds to emergency calls for medical assistance, fire suppression, hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, explosions, bomb threats, downed power lines, and other emergency situations; responds to instructions from dispatcher. Assists in providing basic, intermediate, and advanced life support treatment to patients as well as transportation to appropriate medical facilities; assesses the condition of patients and makes decisions regarding proper courses of action; administers initial treatment at emergency scene, such as CPR, cardiac monitoring, medication calculation and administration, immobilization of body, wound treatment, control of bleeding, monitoring and relaying of vital signs, oxygen and IV therapy administration, sterile suctioning, intubation, defibrillation, ECG monitoring and the management of cardiac arrest and severe trauma patients; performs extrication of victims from wreckage, as necessary; maintains radio communications with dispatch center, hospital personnel, and other public safety agencies to receive and to transmit instructions involving patient care; maintains all treatment-related documentation. Assists in providing protection of life and property; suppresses, controls and extinguishes fires; performs search, rescue, extrication of victims, and forcible entries; assists individuals from burning structures; establishes openings in buildings for entrance, ventilation, or salvage; ventilates smoke and gas from buildings; positions/climbs ladders of various heights to access upper levels of buildings and perform rescue operations; performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris; assists with cleanup activities. Assists in locating water supplies to fight fires; lays out and maneuvers fire hoses; operates pumps and directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire; determines appropriate quantity of water to supply and level of water pressure to use on lines; disconnects and rolls used hoses. Maintains a state of readiness/preparation for emergency response; checks/maintains stock of equipment and supplies on fire vehicles and in fire station; re-loads equipment and apparatus following response to emergency calls; assists in preparing apparatus for subsequent emergencies and in testing hoses/pumps on apparatus. Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, buildings, quarters, apparatus, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting/testing equipment, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning quarters, or grounds maintenance; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment for necessary maintenance work. Provides response, assistance, or follow-up for non-emergency situations, such as investigating 911 hang-up calls, investigating odors, or checking well-being of elderly residents. Assists with determining cause of fires; investigates and gathers information from scene; prepares and forwards findings. Assists with providing the public with information regarding fire safety issues; participates in fire prevention, pre-fire planning and other fire education activities for other government agencies and the public; schedules and conducts fire safety programs; conducts tours of fire station and fire trucks. Prepares various records and reports such as incident reports, station log books, bag sheet ledgers, operator's report, leave requests, fire inspection reports, etc. Communicates with supervisors, employees, volunteers, dispatchers, other departments, fire officials, law enforcement officials, medical personnel, property owners/occupants, victims, utility companies, civic organizations, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures; maintains an awareness of new equipment, procedures, trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; participates in physical fitness training and fire drills; attends regular continuing education classes in fire-fighting, rescue, first aid, fire prevention, equipment maintenance and related subjects to remain knowledgeable and develop skills in fire-fighting methods. Operates, utilizes and maintains various firefighting and medical equipment and tools, such as a fire truck, generators, air compressor, vehicles, shovels, axes, chain saws, self contained breathing apparatus, special protective clothing, fire extinguishers, certain chemicals used in fighting fires, bars, hooks, aerial ladder truck, fire pumper truck, portable generators, gas saws; operates a personal computer or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software. Operates a personal computer, telephone, or other office equipment as necessary to complete administrative functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Performs general housekeeping, laundry, cooking, and maintenance work associated with maintaining fire station; operates related equipment. Provides general public service functions, such as providing standby assistance for fireworks displays or helicopter landings, escorting parades/funerals, or providing general directions. Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED; Valid Paramedic Certification. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
