The City of Newberry is looking for firefighters to join our staff! We are a progressive City and are making strides in how our firefighters work, learn, and are paid. The City’s fire department operates on 2236 hours annually with work being scheduled on a 24/48 rotating shift. Call back rates apply for interrupted sleep time while on shift, training time when scheduled off shift, working parades/events, and when returning while off-duty to perform work during scheduled time off. Fringe Benefits: • 11 holidays per year + 1 annual floating birthday • Accrue two weeks of sick leave annually (3.31 hours/pay period) starting from date of hire • From date of hire, accrue two weeks of vacation time annually (3.31 hours/pay period) up to 2 years of service; then accruals increase to three weeks (4.96 hours/pay period); at 15 years of service, accruals increase to four weeks (6.62 hours/pay period). Our fire department was formed in 1873. We currently have 20 career firefighters and more than 20 volunteer members. The Newberry Fire department promotes training of all staff fire personnel in interior structural firefighting, confined space rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, fire inspection, and fire prevention. Firefighter I General Job Duties: • Performs firefighting, hazardous materials and technical rescues • Firefighters are responsible for ensuring emergency equipment is in working order through scheduled checks and maintenance, conduct fire and life safety inspections of residential and commercial buildings in the Newberry area, as well as respond to emergency calls safely and operate equipment to effectively handle the situation. • Another aspect of Firefighter I duties is to be a customer relations liaison for the department through smoke detector installation, attend special community events, and school functions, including to educate all age levels through programs for life and fire safety. Firefighter I Minimum Requirements: • Requires high school diploma or GED • Must be able to pass applicable physical in accordance with NFPA 1582. Must be physically able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally and/or frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects. • Residency Requirement of living within a 20-minute call out to the Fire Department • Must have valid SC Driver’s License. • Must have the ability to attend 240 hours of training per year beyond the duties on shift, respond to emergency calls when off duty, have CPR and first aid certifications. Entry Level Firefighter I - Salary / Non-Exempt Pay $34,700 – Fire Engineer – Salary / Non-Exempt Pay $38,579 The City of Newberry is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
