The City of Lancaster Fire Department is seeking applications for the position Firefighter. The starting base salary for this position is $47,844.58 with opportunities for a higher starting point depending on training and experience. Job Description: Under general supervision, receives and responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls as required, and performs the necessary functions and operations to efficiently and effectively protect the lives and property of those in need of assistance. Performs fire inspections and pre-fire planning, educational presentations, minor vehicle and equipment maintenance, and related tasks. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Responds to emergency situations within the City to perform rescue and fire control; selects appropriate firefighting equipment in controlling and extinguishing fires; lays and connects hoses; holds nozzles and directs fog or water streams; raises and climbs ladders; ventilates burning buildings; gains access to buildings as necessary to assist fire victims.  Drives equipment to emergency scenes; selects position and proper discharge pressures and monitors pumping activities.  Responds to a variety of emergency calls requiring administration of first aid and medical treatment at the First Responder level, including administering CPR, removing victims from danger, administering first aid, etc.  Performs general equipment maintenance and cleaning as necessary.  Conducts flow tests and paints fire hydrants.  Participates in fire drills; attends required training courses and seminars.  Inventories emergency vehicles at the beginning of each shift to ensure the station has all it needs to respond to emergency situations.  Performs fire prevention inspections of residential and commercial buildings and contents; conducts pre-fire planning as needed.  Presents fire prevention and fire safety education programs; answers public inquiries pertaining to fire prevention matters; makes periodic public presentations to clubs, schools and other organizations on fire prevention and safety.  Responds to emergency calls 24 hours per day, seven days per week.  Prepares and submits various reports and records including inspection reports, hose/hydrant records, pre-fire plans, daily work sheets, correspondence, etc.  Operates and maintains an assortment of equipment and hand tools used in fire service such as vehicles, fire trucks, aerial towers, pumpers, fire suppression equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus, special protective clothing, radio equipment, generators, fire extinguishers, ladders, certain chemicals used in fighting fires, hand and power tools, etc. Uses computers, adding machine, copier, fax, telephone, and other office equipment as needed.  Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other department supervisors and employees, co-workers, other City department heads and employees, volunteers, fire personnel of other jurisdictions, contractors, South Carolina civic and community organizations, business/property owners, medical/hospital personnel, and the general public.  Performs general administrative work, including but not limited to attending meetings, preparing reports and correspondence, entering computer data, copying and filing documents, etc.  Cleans and performs general maintenance at the station, which includes but is not limited to, painting, plumbing, electrical work, repairing anything around the buildings, and building and maintaining props for training.  Conducts pump and hose tests; performs hydrant maintenance and testing as needed. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position. PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  A High School Diploma or GED equivalent with a minimum of one (1) year of related experience.  Must complete required coursework and maintain certifications as issued by the South Carolina Fire Academy, including IFSAC Firefighter 2.  Must become certified as a Medical First Responder or higher level.  Must possess a valid South Carolina Class E driver’s license, or CDL with a tanker endorsement, or the equivalent license issued by your state of residence.
