Firefighter - Engineer Fire Department Firefighter I General Job Duties: • Performs firefighting, hazardous materials and technical rescues • Firefighters are responsible for ensuring emergency equipment is in working order through scheduled checks and maintenance, conduct fire and life safety inspections of residential and commercial buildings in the Newberry area, as well as respond to emergency calls safely and operate equipment to effectively handle the situation. • Another aspect of Firefighter I duties is to be a customer relations liaison for the department through smoke detector installation, attend special community events, and school functions, including to educate all age levels through programs for life and fire safety. Firefighter I Minimum Requirements: • Requires high school diploma or GED • Must be able to pass applicable physical in accordance with NFPA 1582. Must be physically able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally and/or frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects. • Residency Requirement of living within a 20-minute call out to the Fire Department • Must have valid SC Driver’s License. • Must have the ability to attend 240 hours of training per year beyond the duties on shift, respond to emergency calls when off duty, have CPR and first aid certifications. Entry Level Firefighter I - Salary / Non-Exempt Pay $33,722 Engineer General Job Duties: • Performs emergency work acting as a crew leader and organizer for emergency scene functions to include equipment operation and fire suppression. • Work involves fulfilling duties of officers of the department when they are on leave; and serving as the technical expert for equipment and vehicles for the response to and operation of those items to ensure mitigation of incident. • Ensures the constant readiness of all department apparatus and equipment such as electronics, thermal imagers, pumps generators, and aerial devices. Conducts and ensures quality performance of mandated daily activities such as equipment checks, building and grounds maintenance, training programs, inspection reports, hydrant flows and testing, and duties as prescribed within daily journal entries. • Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as incident reports, daily reports, inspection reports, training reports, and pre-incident response plans. • Assists other agencies in the conduct of emergency scene mitigation and ensuring public safety. Manages the station and supervises personnel in the absence of an officer. Engineer Minimum Training and Experience: • Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent with (2) two to (3) three years in fire services or fire training experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. • Must have successfully completed required courses and certification; may be required to possess additional certification(s) as deemed necessary by the City. • Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license. • Residency Requirement of living within a 20-minute call out to the Fire Department • Must possess CPR and first aid certifications. • Must have the ability to attend 240 hours of training per year beyond the duties on shift, respond to emergency calls when off duty, have CPR and first aid certifications.
