This is an entry-level trainee position intended for individuals without prior fire service experience and/or current in-state certifications. Trainees will complete a Resident Recruit School at the South Carolina Fire Academy (SCFA) to gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties of a certified firefighter in the state of South Carolina. SCFA’s Resident Recruit School is located in Columbia, SC and is a rigorous 8-week training program that requires all recruits to live on campus during the week (M-F). Upon successful completion of the required recruit school and receipt of IFSAC Firefighter II certification, the trainee will advance to a probationary Firefighter II with applicable pay increase (grade N-108, minimum salary $44,171). Probationary firefighters will be placed on a 48/96 schedule and receive the required on-the-job training necessary to protect life and property by controlling and extinguishing fires and responding to a variety of emergency incidents. Trainees are considered regular, full-time employees for the duration of the required training and are eligible for all associated fringe benefits. Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of SCFA Recruit School. Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent is required. A valid S.C. driver’s license is required.
