The Slater-Marietta Fire District is accepting applications for its next Fire Chief. Its next leader will be expected to build upon a solid operational foundation while focusing on professionalism and innovation. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Slater-Marietta Fire District’s four fire stations service an area encompassing 50 square-miles. The district lies thirty minutes from Ashville NC, twenty minutes from Greenville SC, and ten minutes from Travelers Rest SC. The district consists of rural, residential, and commercial properties. The ideal candidate will be an engaged manager and mentor with a history of building and maintaining strong teams. In addition, the candidate must have demonstrated personal integrity and a proven track record of honesty at all times. FUNCTION: Reporting directly to the Board of Commissioners, the Fire Chief plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates all district operations, including emergency medical first response, fire prevention and fire suppression. The Fire Chief will provide advice and assistance to the Board of Commissioners in setting policies for the district. TYPICAL DUTIES: o Regularly discuss with the Fire Board short and long-range vision for the District. o Plans, organizes, and directs day to day activities associated with a full service fire department. o Respond to major emergencies as needed. o Prepare the annual budget for the department, for presentation to the Board of Commissioners. o Represent the Department as a community leader while building relationships with business leaders, community groups, and professional organizations. o Establish a team environment that effectively implements the Department's mission and vision. o Coordinate department activities with other fire and governmental agencies. o Select, supervise, train, and evaluate department personnel. o Pursue a safe and healthy work environment. o Must have the ability to effectively communicate and maintain positive working relationships with the Board of Commissioners, subordinates, other public safety personnel, and members of the public in general. o Must have thorough understanding of the principles and practices of modern fire department administration, risk management, and personnel training. o Must be current with industry standards and best practices. o Applicable laws, regulations, ordinances, and codes pertaining to fire protection, fire prevention and arson investigation. o Strategic planning and grant solicitation processes. o Make timely decisions. o Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. o Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: o 10 Years career fire service experience (preferred), with a minimum of three years as a fire officer (preferred). Education: o An associate degree in Fire Science or equivalent, (Bachelors preferred). o All prerequisite fire training up to and including IFSAC/Pro Board Fire Instructor 1, Fire Officer IV, ICS, NREMT-B. Additional: o Must be able to pass a physical, as prescribed by NFPA 1582, in effort to maintain Fire Brigade clearance. o Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. (Applicants must submit a 10 Year Driving Record with Application). o Must be able to pass drug screening. o Must be able to pass SLED background check, (As prescribed by the South Carolina State Fire Marshal's Office). o Acceptable Credit Report (Will provide authorization forms to conduct credit checks) Pay and Benefits: o Starting pay $72,000 Annual. o Health insurance plans include family, dental and vision. o Enrollment in the South Carolina PORS defined benefit retirement system.
