The Town of Moncks Corner is seeking a dedicated, highly skilled, and motivated professional to serve as Fire Chief, leading our professional Fire Department with a commitment to excellence. This role involves the professional management and development of the Moncks Corner Fire Department, ensuring effective oversight of all department activities and strategies. Key responsibilities include public safety, administrative and supervisory work in planning, organizing, and directing the operations of the Fire Department, including directing fire grounds and other emergency operations, and safeguarding the lives and property of Moncks Corner residents. The Fire Chief will also advise senior Town officials on the development and coordination of Fire operations and serves as the Town’s Safety Coordinator. The Fire Chief, reporting to the Town Administrator, oversees a team of 28 full-time employees, including Fire Fighters, Engineers, Captains, and Battalion Chiefs, operating out of two stations with an annual budget of approximately $3.8 million. The department provides a variety of services designed to enhance public safety and community engagement including suppression, emergency medical services (BLS), community risk reduction, and investigations. The Moncks Corner Fire Department is committed to minimizing loss of life, suffering, and damage resulting from fire, medical, and environmental emergencies in our community. We are a Fire Safe South Carolina Community and enjoy an ISO Public Protection Classification of 2. The Fire Chief must be an engaged leader both within the department and in the broader community, balancing trust in staff to handle incidents with active collaboration across departments, citizens, and regional partners. Beyond administrative expertise, the ideal candidate will demonstrate impeccable integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to organizational improvement. They must lead by example in recruitment, training, and retention, fostering a motivated and productive team. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader with exceptional communication skills, capable of cultivating a positive culture within the department. They should prioritize staff development through enhanced training and responsibilities while focusing on morale, productivity, and retention. Experience working in diverse communities and building strong relationships with neighboring fire departments is essential. The candidate must also be adept at partnering with other emergency and governmental agencies, leveraging technology, social media, and data-driven strategies to enhance public safety. Key Priorities of the Next Fire Chief: • Evaluating the department to assess what alignment and changes are needed to initiate and implement best practices; • Leveraging internal talent while evaluating recruitment challenges for attraction and retention of staff; • Ensuring professionalism permeates all levels of the organization and continues to build community trust; • Overseeing the renovation and expansion of Station I and the construction, equipping and staffing of Station III; and, • Foster greater relationships with education partners, community organizations, local and regional public safety, and intergovernmental organizations. Qualifications: • Requires an Associate’s degree (Bachelor’s preferred) in public administration, business, or fire science/technology, supplemented by ten (10) years of progressive experience and training in fire service programs and management, with at least some supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. • Special Certifications and Licenses: Valid Class E Driver's License, NFPA Firefighter I, NFPA Firefighter II, OSHA Hazardous Materials Technician, NFA NIMS 300 and 400 Incident Command, Fire Officer I, Fire Officer II, and Fire Instructor I. • The selected candidate must reside within the Town’s corporate limits within six months (exceptions to residency will be considered on a case-by-case basis). • If selected, a candidate must be certified as Deputy State Fire Marshal and South Carolina Fire Instructor. Must complete the required coursework and maintain certifications as issued by the S.C. Fire Academy. Pay Info: The starting salary range is anticipated to be $81,759 - $93,000 annually, depending on a candidate’s qualifications and experience. A vehicle is provided, and other benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, and enrollment in the South Carolina retirement program.
