Beautiful Beach Community Seeks Fire Chief Isle of Palms, South Carolina, operating under a Council form of government, seeks an outstanding teambuilding leader to be their next Fire Chief. The successful candidate has served in multiple fire service functions and roles with a track record of role modeling a passion for their work, and advocacy for best practices in staff recruitment and retention, as well as acquisition and access to equipment, technology, and training. The community desires their Fire Chief to be a strong, consistent leader with abilities in energizing the Department, continuously seeking performance excellence while leveraging resources in a tight budget climate. The next Fire Chief will be engaged within the department but will also be visible and collaborative across City departments and the community with the goal of meeting the safety needs of the City. About the department and position: Reporting to the City Administrator, the Fire Chief will lead the Isle of Palms Fire Department (IOPFD) which consists of thirty (33) full-time positions including one (1) Deputy Chief, (1) Administrative Assistant, one (1) Training Officer, one (1) Fire Inspector, three (3) Shift Battalion Chiefs, three (3) Captains, twelve (12) Engineers, twelve (12) Firefighters, three (3) part-time positions and up to three (3) support volunteers. The Chief will supervise a $5M budget and two fire stations, both were specially designed and built to withstand Category 3 hurricanes. The IOPFD responded to 767 calls in 2020 and 919 year to date through October 2021. Equipment currently consists of Engine 1001: 2009 E-1 Rescue Pumper, Engine 1002: 2021 refurbished, Tower 1002: 2003/2020 (Refurbished) E-1 95' Platform (Quint), Truck 1001: 2020 E-1 75' Aerial (Quint), Rescue 1001: 2016 E-1 Rescue (with pump, tank, and cascade system), (3) boats, (2) Yamaha Jet Skis, (3) ATVs, and (4) 4x4 pickup trucks. The IOPFD serves the City for fire and rescue needs, has established mutual aid agreements to ensure adequate resource and response needs are met and has maintained an ISO rating of 1 since 2017 for residential and commercial properties. The Chief must be visible and engaged within the department and in the community and exhibit outstanding communication skills with all stakeholders to achieve the high standards and excellence of service the community has come to expect. Qualifications: The City seeks a fire safety leader with a minimum of 10 years at the Battalion Chief Rank or higher and progressive fire safety experience with a minimum of 5 years of cross-functional and progressively responsible experience including fire suppression, prevention, and administrative work; a BA/BS degree required. Knowledge of coastal/ islands and tourist communities is a plus. Compensation and Benefits: The range is $92,107 -$142,766 with a midpoint of $117, 437. Salary placement is dependent upon experience, qualifications and in adherence with pay equity.
