Job Title: Chaplain Department: Executive SCSFA Mission: The South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association was founded in 1905 to provide the state’s firefighters and fire departments with education, training, benefits, and representation. Our mission is to serve the membership as the leader in advocacy, benefits, education, and safety, while acting as the steward of the Firemen’s Insurance and Inspection Fund. JOB SUMMARY The chaplain is one who takes on the role of providing spiritual and other support to those in the fire service and those affected by emergency crisis. The Chaplain is a member of the leadership team of the Association and provides for the pastoral needs of the committees, membership, and staff of the SC State Firefighters’ Association. The Chaplain, through training and certification, assists the individuals and groups in the understanding of life’s events as they relate to spiritual, and emotional well-being through the offering of consultation, prayers, and formal services. The Chaplain will be reimbursed for any expenses incurred as a result of the above or other Association duties. The Chaplain will serve at the pleasure of the Executive Committee for the duration of the desire term of office. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: • Responding effectively and promptly to requests for Association and member’s support. • Overseeing, conducting, and monitoring the Association’s religious activities. • Maintaining a healthy professional relationship with the Association executive leadership • Provide spiritual services and guidance while respecting people’s unique experiences in order to create meaningful relationships. • Collaborate with other agencies to develop a strong spiritual care team to positively impact the South Carolina first responder community. • Creates an open and inviting environment, free of judgement, to minister to members. • Provides counsel to distressed and bereaved members and families while providing guidance to healing and understanding. • The Chaplain shall attend the annual conference and any other meetings of the Association or the Executive Committee, or any regular meeting or any member department upon invitation, when requested and approved by the President. • The Chaplain shall advise on religious matters that may concern the Association and offer an invocation and benediction at all meetings. • The Chaplain shall direct the theological and ecumenical content of the annual Association Memorial Service. • The Chaplain shall offer spiritual aid to families of deceased members in the form of cards or notes as deemed appropriate by the Chaplain. • The Chaplain should be available to coordinate and serve with the Association’s Local Assistance State Team (LAST) for Line of Duty Death Events • The Chaplain should be available to coordinate and serve with the Association’s First Responder Assistance Support Team (FAST) • The Chaplain will serve at the request of the President on any special committees as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: • Must be of upstanding character both in the professional career and personal life. • Must have a clear national background check. • Must have a South Carolina driver’s license. • Must have the ability to meet the obligations of the Executive Committee meetings, and other required annual events, as listed above. • Should exhibit and must possess recognized theological training in pastoral care and have demonstrated those competencies in a pastoral environment. • Must be able to lead prayer and services in the memorial and remembrance of Association members. • Should have solid standing in a recognized denomination demonstrating the general theological needs of Association members. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is considered sedentary, involves walking or standing some of the time, and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations. The work may infrequently require participation and attendance to field exercises of emergency services and response to major emergency incidents as directed by the Association management. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: balancing, mental acuity, and speaking. WORKING CONDITIONS: Office work environment involves exposure to no known environmental hazards; and involves decision making that could lead to major organizational consequences.
