Leadership Institute Weekend

The Leadership Institute is meeting this weekend (Feb. 3-5, 2012) at Hickory Knob State Park located in McCormick, S.C.  This weekend, the Institute members are hearing various presentations over a three-day period.  I have listed the topics below so our readers will have an idea of what this group is discussing.

  • Insurance Services Office (ISO) presentation
  • “Tell the Truth” by Chief Carter Jones
  • National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) by Chief Tony Dicks
  • Abbeville County Overview by Fire Marshal Dan Evatt
  • McCormick County Overview by the McCormick County Panel
  • “Each One, Reach One” by Chief Trey Cooper
  • Recruitment and Retention Discussion
  • Fire Service Legals and Liability
  • Bush River VFD Presentation by Chief Blair Long

So far, Institute members have shared positive comments about the presentations and speakers.  We trust the entire program will benefit all parties involved, and it will prove to be a valuable resource to current and future leaders of our state’s fire service.

Chief Jones of Plum Branch made a very important statement during the presentation of the fire service of McCormick County.    We must conduct ourselves as professionals.   To further expand on that due we present ourselves at our calls as professionals?   Are we dressing like firefighters?  Do we present ourselves as professional firefighters?   These thoughts were spurred by Chief Jones and the other chiefs of McCormick County as they made comments about their own departments.

What an amazing weekend so far.  Big City people should come visit McCormick County.  There are so many lessons to be learned.  So thankful for the Firefighters Association for providing this awesome experience.  The things that i learned today will help me make decisions the rest of my life.  These chiefs and firefighters care so much about their community.  McCormick County is a better place because of them.

Great weekend in McCormick County!  Had a blast learning about the rural departments in S.C. and how they run.  It was very up lifting to see a bunch of guys who just want to help out in their community, regardless of the pay, or should I say how much they aren’t getting paid.  They are there for the right reasons!!  It was great fellowship on the golf course as well!!
